Stupor Tuesday

I'm watching CNN in the background, but I'm not sure what the point is of watching these things live. I don't think we'll know anything substantial about what has happened until tomorrow morning.

Glasgow Airport Attack

It seems to have been relatively harmless though undoubtedly frightening. What's painful is watching CNN desperately try to cycle the same bits of info and yet make them sound fresh each time. (A truck crash! Men arrested! We have video of a fire!) BBC World had not, at last viewing, broken into its programming on the tenth anniversary of the Hong Kong handover.

Blaming Women

There was an item on CNN this morning (I was bored, okay?) about how childhood obesity is linked to more women in the workplace. The line goes something like, since women don't have time to make dinner or foist exercise on their children, the kids are consigned to a life of Burger King and XBox.

What about men?

At no point did the story suggest that, well, maybe fathers are just as capable of cooking meals as mothers are. The central premise that women ought to cook every meal was sort of assumed in the article. I don't know whether it was deliberate or not, but it's something to ponder the next time that you hear that the media has some sort totalitarian "feminazi" agenda that it is eager to enforce.

Who Are You Gonna Believe?

"Straight Talk" John McCain, or your own lying eyes? Digby has the exchange here. Money quotes from McCain:

"There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods today."

And from CNN correspondent Michael Ware (who's actually in Baghdad):

"To suggest that there's any neighborhood in this city where an American can walk freely is beyond ludicrous. I'd love Senator McCain to tell me where that neighborhood is and he and I can go for a stroll."

Between this and the condom fiasco, I think McCain's Straight Talk Express has been revealed to anyone who cares to look as a total sham.

I flipped between CNN and BBC World this morning, here's an example of what I found:

CNN: A fashion show for new Army uniforms followed by anxious anticipation of a press conference on Anna Nicole Smith's autopsy.

BBC: An extended report on whether Rwandan President Paul Kagame was complicit in war crimes.

I know that the Beeb is far from perfect, but given the alternative...
