Moving...

This is it I reckon, I'm going to be pulling the trigger on moving this blog over to Wordpress. In the past while I have been using WP and I quite like it. I will continue to cross-post for a while, but this is fair warning to start updating bookmarks and the like. The new address will be http://mnfu.wordpress.com which is somewhat easier and faster to type I think. Bear with me as I get all the links, widgets, et cetera switched over.

Brightening Up

I decided that I'd had things around here the same way for long enough. I'm going to try out a nice white background. I also tried to clean up the sidebar a bit, it was getting cluttered. Tell me what you think.

More Blog-Pimpin'

Haloscan has partnered with JS-Kit to add a feature where you can rate posts. I'm not sure quite how it all works, but that's what the "rate" thing means if you're seeing it at the bottom of posts. Actually I think that a widget clean-up is in the future for this blog, the sidebar looks a little cluttered now. What should I keep?

Third Birthday

MNFU has now been going for three years, so, uh, good for me!

I survived!

Expect regularly scheduled blogging to return tomorrow morning. My workplace had a big inspection but we did fine, so I'm going to be back shortly.

Managing Expectations

My work situation will be hectic up to Wednesday, so posting may be minimal for the beginning of the week.

In the meantime, why can't we drive this car? It would be just fine downtown if nowhere else.

Registering a Domain Name

Who has the best deal out there for domain name hosting? I'm wondering if I should step up from the blogspot domain to something more personal. Thoughts?

I'm Baaaaack

The vacation's over, I actually made this year without looking at the internets once! Regular blogging should resume today or tomorrow.

Dead Tired

I finished up the final phase of moving today and I'm suitably exhausted. Tomorrow my vacation from both life and blogging will commence. I might throw up some fun YouTube stuff before then, but no guarantees.

After Victoria Day

Having burned lots of hydrocarbons to get away for a bit in the name of celebrating the birthday of a long-dead imperialist, I'm ready to get back to blogging!

Blogging Miscellany

I don't know if you've all noticed but Sitemeter appears to have completed a nice redesign. It no longer looks like the portal to 1998 when you check your stats. (But I mean who ever checks stats? It's not like blogging is a vanity project on some level, is it?)

I also see that Haloscan has had another one of its hiccups on my site, I'm sure it'll be back though...

About Me

This blog usually doesn't say much about me - at least about my personal life in any particular detail. I'd sort of prefer to keep it that way, but I should mention that I got myself a much more involving job (teaching) than what I'd previously been doing.

I really dearly want to keep this up, and I'm planning to, but the next two months will be hectic.

Tim O'Reilly has never been in a car with me

There are some attempts being made by the Wise Old Men of the internets to regulate what people say on blogs (h/t Dennis Perrin). I won't delve into the obvious the problems of such a code of conduct (Mr. Perrin did a better job of that anyway) but one line stood out to me:

"We won't say anything online that we wouldn't say in person."

Well isn't that a charming statement, but what does "in person" mean? In person drunk at a bar? In person in church? In person at a sporting contest of some sort?

The term "in person" is one that is deeply contextualized. By way of my title, I have a confession, while I am often very mild-mannered, when driving I tend to make frank remarks about drivers around me. I use slang terms to describe those that cannot move out of the left lane while doing 80km/h on the 401 or those that cannot figure out how to turn their vehicles or use the appropriate signaling devices.

Often times these slang descriptions may attack said poor drivers by way of suggesting that they ought to engage bizarre sexual acts, I may also assault the reputation of their mothers, or suggest that they lack certain reproductive organs. On several occasions I have suggested that their relatives may be sex-trade workers (I feel I must apologize for this as I'm sure that many sex-trade workers who have whole families of commendable drivers).

Is this the kind of "in person" language that I am supposed to use on blogs?

Blogging Notes

Keith is taking another kick at the proverbial blogging can.

Last week I was able to meet Ron (thus concluding with some finality that he isn't a Suncor-owned computer program generating random bits of html code) and show him some interesting bits of Toronto.

Made it through to the other side

I decided that I'd have to switch over sooner or later, so I took the plunge in the new version of blogger. You probably won't see too much difference here just yet, but I have made some bigger changes with my other blog. I think it looks a lot better than it did.
